Scandinavian Mythology
Class Description
Scandinavian Mythology has an iron grip on the popular imagination in the Twenty-first Century, which makes modern people feel close to the world of the Norse gods. But what do we actually know about the beliefs of the Scandinavians prior to the Viking Age? How did these beliefs change during the Viking Era and throughout the Middle Ages? Why did dusty old manuscripts found in Icelandic attics become important to the Western European imagination in the Eighteenth Century and then increase in influence until the entire world was filled with stories of Norse gods and Nordic heroes in one of the most popular cultural artifacts – the movies? This class has the answers! No Text: Instructor will provide handouts.
